Selective Mutism

Being Unmuted is a blog created to help raise awareness for Selective Mutism and make it easier to find resources to help those with Selective Mutism and people who know them.

A person who has Selective Mutism is unable to speak or speaks in a low tone in given situations or to specific people, but will speak in a normal or more audible tone in other situations. Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or social anxiety.

If you know someone who you suspect has Selective Mutism, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Helping Your Child with Selective Mutism: Practical Steps to Overcome a Fear of Speaking By Angela E. McHolm PH.D. This book was a great resource in helping our daughter overcome Selective Mutism.

If you have any questions regarding Selective Mutism or are looking for advice, resources or assistance, please feel free to email me at beckar40@gmail.com
